Lito's Empanadas brings the popular South American street food to Lincoln Park. Although not quite as wonderful as the Peruvian empanadas I sampled in Cusco a couple years ago, I so wish I lived closer to this tiny empanada shop. A friend and I randomly popped in for a snack after having fro yo at red mango, so I only sampled one of the nine savory empanadas on the menu.
Lito's must rely heavily on take-out business because there is hardly any place to sit inside. But it certainly beat standing in line at Julia's Empanadas in Dupont circle in DC!
I tried the spinach empanada with onion, and mozzarella in a flaky, slightly sweet crust. It was fried hot to order in canola oil. Be sure to get the fresh hot sauce made from cilantro, onion and jalapeno as the empanadas are pretty mild.
The menu also features two dessert empanadas- the choco-banana and apple cinnamon. And get this, each empanada is less than $2.49!
Next time you find yourself in Lincoln Park, skip the Wiener Circle and head to Lito's Empanadas. You won't regret it.
